Course Description

The intensive care unit (ICU) is an area specialized where skilled personnel and sophisticated equipment are readily available to manage critically ill patients. It is the most expensive, technologically advanced, and resource-intensive area of medical care. The current trend is that the anesthesia and internal medicine departments share the responsibility of managing these beds. There is a strong demand to increase the ICU beds in all hospitals due to the rise in the aging population and the increasing burden of diseases. However, there is a paucity of trained specialists in critical care medicine.

The Certificate in Critical Care Medicine is designed to address this acute shortage of trained professionals to manage critical care units. It will impart the knowledge and skills needed to provide critical care to patients admitted to the ICU.

In this course, you will learn:

  • Functioning of the ICU
  • Skills required for resuscitation
  • Initial management of acutely ill patients
  • Investigations ordered in the ICU and their interpretation
  • To gain practical knowledge about the usage of fluids, blood products, and drugs in the ICU
  • To manage some common problems seen in the ICU

Critical illness can occur in anyone irrespective of age, gender, or social status. It can begin in the community or hospital and does not respect traditional divisions into medical specialties. Patients with conditions such as sepsis, hemorrhage, trauma, and stroke can all have or develop a critical illness, and, as such, critical illness has been crudely estimated to result in several million deaths globally each year. Emergency and critical care focus on resuscitating unstable patients and allowing time for recovery or the effect of specific therapies to improve outcomes and prevent death. Exemplary critical care provides rapid therapeutic responses to the failing vital organ systems.

Certificate in Critical Care Medicine incorporates a learning Framework so that the student will be able to effectively manage critical cases such as shock, acid-base abnormalities, and electrolyte abnormalities with fluids, resuscitation, and transfusions. Concurrent organ system failures occurring early in the critical illness should be managed initially by resuscitation and stabilization and complemented later by the specific therapy as per the etiology. The course emphasizes these aspects along with investigations, nutritional support, and common medications used in the ICU.

You will be certainly benefited from this course. While doing this medical course, you will learn about the most expensive, technologically advanced, and resource-intensive areas of medical care. This course on critical care medicine is well-structured and in detail. There is a strong demand to increase the ICU beds in all hospitals due to the rise in the aging population and the increasing burden of diseases. This course on critical care medicine will make you knowledgeable and skilled, which will greatly benefit you when you work in an intensive care unit.
